Emma-Chapters 1 & 2

Hi everyone, and welcome to Lost in a Book’s first meeting!

I hope everyone was able to find “Emma” and read the first 2 chapters.  I have a confession:  I actually did not get “Emma” from the library until yesterday! Ack!  But, I did pick it up and read through chapters 1 and 2….I really enjoyed them.  What did you think?  Did you have a favorite part or quote?  We were introduced to several characters-each one very different.  Which character stood out to you most, and what are your thoughts on his/her attitude?

I’m eager to see your responses, so let the discussion begin!  Comment your responses below and let’s get started! :-)

  1. Hey Emily!
I'm here with my copy of "Emma" and a cup of sweet tea!

Annie sends her regards...she won't be able to be in the bookclub. I'm sorry!! She realized she needs to focus on her homework. And that she's already in the middle of a couple reading books. :P

I really liked the first two chapters!

  2. I think my favorite character was Mr. Knightley. He seemed to just tell it like it was. Hehe ;) I think my least favorite character was Emma's dad. LOL

I think Mr. Weston's story is sad...

And I bet you that while Emma is trying to match Mr. Elton up with someone, she ends up falling for him. Hehe ;)

Anyways...those are just my thoughts. What about you?

  3. Hi Katie!

I'm so glad you're able to be here!

The first two chapters were great, weren't they? What I really got out of the first chapter was that Mr. Woodhouse is a pessimist! :) Also, I believe him to be just a tad blind to his daughters "odd humors". :)

Tell Annie not to feel bad! I totally understand!

Hope you're enjoying your sweet tea! :)

  4. I certainly appreciate Mr. Knightley...he told it like it was, didn't he? LOL! I think Emma needs a bit more of that!

I don't know about Mr. Elton and Emma....my personal opinion is that there is going to be sometihng happening with Mr. Knightly and/or Mr. Weston's son. :)

  5. I think Emma needs more of that too! I think she's been spoiled a lot...lol

    Oooo that would be interesting!

  6. Yeah...Emma needs someone like Mr. Knightly to straighten her out! LOL!

It seems kind of weird to think about Emma and Mr. Knightly since Mr. K is older than Emma by 16 or 17 yeasrs, but we shall see! :)

I thought it was sad about Mr. Weston's first wife...she wanted both her husband and her money/position. Not being able to have both led she and her husband to living "beyond their income"...not a good idea!:o

  7. Yes I agree! She needs a stern hand...or something. Haha!

My parents are actually 17 years apart in age. ;) We shall see what happens! It's exciting!

Yeah, the story of Mr. Weston's first wife was sad... And I agree. Living beyond one's income is definitely not a good idea. :P And I think it's sad he only gets to see his son once a year.. :( But, I think him and Miss Taylor will make a good couple! :)

  8. Emily,
I'm sorry to skip out a few minutes early. :P We're going to see "Tangled". I thought this was a very good meeting! :) I'll talk to my friend...I don't think she knew about the time change. Sorry about that!

I'll talk to you soon! Have a great day!
    Katie

  9. That's neat about your parents...my Grandpa is 10 years older than my Grandma.

Yes, it is sad that Mr. Weston only gets to see his son once a year. Since the chapter (2) devoted a bit of attention on Frank, I have a feeling he is going to be a "victim" (LOL) of Emma's schemes or perhaps her suiter? :)

"Poor" Miss Taylor (:smiles:) will be a fine wife for Mr. Weston... and I'm sure Emma would agree entirely! :) Miss Taylor sounds like a sweet person, however, it seems that she was involved in spoiling her pupil/friend.

  11. Ahh...Jane Austen's Emma is one of my favorite books. Mr. Knightley is such a caring gentleman and a great friend because he speaks the truth to Emma even when no one else will. Have you seen the 2009 mini-series of Emma? If you haven't seen it you should watch it because I think you would love it. It is my favorite Emma adaption.

Oh, I found your blog through a comment on Katie's blog. Feel welcome to sometime drop by my blog. Have a good day. Thanks for reading this comment.
