Discussion

Yeah, that was just not very nice of Mrs. Bennet at all. I keep wondering why she's not more concerned with her daughter. It's always been about getting Jane matched with Mr. Bingley. Katie

Mrs. Bennet seems a bit obsessed with getting Jane married to Mr. Bingley.  You gotta love how gracious and kind Mr. Bingley is even after Mrs. Bennet’s rude remarks to his best friend. Emily

Discussion

Oooh that is very interesting! I bet you're right! Katie

Didn’t you feel just terrible for Lizzy when Mrs. Bennet came over to Netherfield “to see Jane”? Mrs. Bennet was just so rude to Mr. Darcy! Emily

Discussion

Hello there, Emily! Miss Bingley quite frustrates me. She's pretty snobby. :P In chapter 10 it seemed like she kind of liked Mr. Darcy. Hmm... Katie

Hi there, Katie! Yeah, it does kind of seem like Miss Bingley is interested in Mr. Darcy.  Perhaps that part of the reason why she is so snobby…not saying that it’s right for her to be so despicably rude to Lizzy Bennet, but I think her “crush” is the root of the problem.  Emily

Pride and Prejudice-Chapters 9 and 10

Hello Everyone, and Happy Sunday! Hope you are having a good day!

So, here we are to discuss chapters 9 and 10 of P & P! Jane and Elizabeth are still over at Netherfield...Jane suffering from a cold while Elizabeth is dealing with the "charming" Miss Bingley and Mrs. Hurst. Mrs. Bennet comes with her other 3 daughters to visit her sick Jane.  While over there, she makes herself out to be rather foolish (at least, in my opinion she does....) and causes Elizabeth a great deal of embarressment.  So, what did you think of these chapters? What were your thoughts on the dialouge?

Discussion

Yeah that's probably true. I think the two of them need to attend "Gossipers Annonymous". Haha! Like off Confessions of a Shopaholic..."Shopaholics Annonymous". Tehehe! Well we've gotta get girly. Thanks again for the book club! I'll talk to you soon! Katie

Yep!  Those two certainly need help! Lol!  I had a nice time talking with you too, Katie!  Have a great rest of the day! Emily

Discussion

Yeah...that's just awful. :( I do appreciate that the men stood up for the Bennet girls a time or two. I wish they had done so more often. Especially Mr. Bingley. If he likes Jane then he shouldn't have stood for anyone talking down about her or her sister. Katie

Oh yes!  Mr. Bingley should have certainly said something to those two! Especially since they're his own sisters!  But, I have a feeling that even his scolding would not have silenced their gossiping! Emily

Discussion

I don't get why Miss Bingley and Mrs. Hurst so dislike Elizabeth. And it seems Miss Bingley is kind of that way with Jane too. It's really quite mean, I think. Katie

Miss Bingley and Mrs. Hurst don't like Jane and Elizabeth because they're snobs.  They believe they are over and above the Bennet sisters, so they're rude to them. That seems to be a pretty common attitude for that time period. Emily

Discussion

Hello Emily! :) Mrs. Bennet makes me laugh. She's so goofy! It's said though, that all her scheming resulted in Jane getting sick. :-P I really liked Elizabeth in chapter six when she set out to make sure her sister was all right. She seemed to be a very faithful sister. Katie

I though it was interesting that Jane's sister walked all the way to the Bingly's house to take care of her sister. Zach

Yes, Elizabeth is a great sister! She walked three miles to get to her sister (after rainy weather, I might add), and then stayed with a group of people who she did not like (and some that didn’t like her) just so she could nurse Jane back to health!

I thought Miss Bingly is absolutely horrid for talking about Elizabeth the way she does…and talking bad about her to Mr. Darcy shows how fickle she is! –Emily

Pride and Prejudice-Chapters 7 & 8

Hi there!

Hope y'all are having a wonderful Sunday, and are enjoying this long weekend! ;)

Well, here we are to discuss more Pride and Prejudice...chapters 7 and 8!  This time, we find Mrs. Bennet scheming to get Jane married to Mr. Bingly!-and now because of her scheme, Jane is sick with a cold....what were your thoughts on these chapters?  The characters are developing a little more, what are your thoughts on them?

Discussion

Yeah I know what you mean. Definitely a possibility. I look forward to seeing how he really turns out to be...like his true colors. ;) Katie

Oh yes!  It's gonna be interesting! Lots of fun! :)  But, anyhow, I had a good time today, Katie...but, I'm going to have to get! Talk to you soon!  Tell Zach I missed him being at the meeting! Emily

Discussion

I know what you mean about Jane. I think that's really wise. I find it really strange how quickly Mr. Darcy went from being a rude prideful person towards Elizabeth to being polite and interested in her...odd. Katie

It is kind of strange about Mr. Darcy having such a sudden change of heart.  Though, what if he had been rude earlier because of his discomfort at the ball? I mean, yes, he was most certainly wrong to say what he did, but maybe he didn't entirely mean it.

Discussion

That part was funny! ;) I must say that I think I disagree with Charlotte's comment when she said "Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance." I think it takes much more than chance. And about Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's new found interest... I can definitely understand Elizabeth's side after the way he treated her.

Yep, I certainly understand why Elizabeth had no interest in Mr. Darcy. And I totally agree with you on Charlotte's comment on happiness in marriage being a metter of chance.  I like how Jane is being guarded...not something you see today...today, girls are quite open with their emotions, which often leads to heartbreak.  Emily

Discussion

I  actually am finishing the last bit of chapter 6 right now...lol (I know...I'm slacking. :P) But I've really enjoyed these last couple of chapters. I think they may be favorite so far. I thought it was funny how they were discussing how to deal with Mr. Bingley and Jane's feelings towards one another. ;) Katie P.S. I totally forgot...and I'm really sorry...but Zach had to work today so he's not going to be able to make it.

Haha! I was actually reading chapters 5 and 6 this afternoon....I know I was running WAY behind this meeting!  Ah well! :)  Anyhow...yeah, I really enjoyed these two chapters too.  I love how Mrs. Bennet and the little Lucas boy are arguing at the end of chapter 5.  That cracked me up! :) Emily

Hi Katie! ;)

Yes, Katie, I am still here!  Don't worry about running late...I was too! :)

So, what were your thoughts on chapters 5 and 6?

Pride and Prejudice-Chapters 5 and 6

Hi there!

Sorry that I'm running a bit late today.  My computer is being VERY SLOW, so that's making things a bit difficult....but, anyhow....So glad that you could be here today to be part of our book club meeting!  Hope your day is going well and that you're ready for some more "Pride and Prejudice"! :)

Chapters 5 and 6 introduced us to the Lucas family.  It also gave us a deeper look at the personality and characteristics of Mr. Bingly, his sisters and his friend, Mr. Darcy.  We learn that Mr. Darcy is beginning to fall for Miss Elizabeth Bennet, though Elizabeth is far from interested.
What are your thoughts on these new characters?  What do you think of the Bingly family and Mr. Darcy now that we know more about them?

Next meeting date: August 6, 2011

Hello there, peoples! ;)

So sorry that I had to clear out of our last meeting so suddenly.  We had a cookout at church, and had to leave (rather quickly) to help get ready for it.  I felt terrible for leaving without saying goodbye. :(

How are things going for y’all?  Summer certainly is passing by rather quickly, isn’t it? Hard to believe that in just a few short weeks, school will be starting back up.  I’m sorry if I ruined your day by mentioning this fact! ;)

So, are y’all ready for more “Pride and Prejudice”? ;) I hope you’re enjoying this book….I know I am!  I am especially enjoying discussing this wonderful book with my wonderful book buddies! :)  Our next meeting date is Saturday, July 29 at 2 pm (Eastern time…please adjust this to your time zone!).  Please read through chapters 5 and 6 in preparation for this meeting.

Y’all have a wonderful week….I’m looking forward to being with you at our next book club meeting!

Happy Reading!

Discussion

Katie:Yeah, maybe so. :) I thought his very outspoken thoughts of Elizabeth was uncalled for and mean. But, I think Elizabeth handled it outstandingly well! I probably would have gone home and cried. Haha!

Emily: Mr. Darcy's comments were certainly uncalled for.  I hate how his attitude about "she's not good enough for me." Just cause he's wealthy, he think he's the best.  Grr....

Discussion

Katie:Actually I don't have sweet tea this time. LOL Mrs. Bennet is funny! And I agree with your description of her. It is odd that Mr. Darcy is like that with the time period and all. I wonder if something happened to him that's making him so rude and unpleasant. ??

Emily: Well, in chapter 3, after Mr. Bingly tries to get him to dance, he (Darcy) declares that, "...I detest it (dancing) unless I am particulary acquainted with my partner." Maybe he was just a bit shy?  But he was still rude...especially after his criticism of Elizabeth Bennet-who he did not even know!

Discussion

Zach : Hello, i enjoyed these two chapters because they brought in some new characters. Such as Mr. Darcy. I also liked the way Mrs. Bennet reacted to Mr. Darcy's proudness.

Emily: I love how Mr. Darcy was the best thing ever because of his 10,000 pounds a year...but then once he showed his pride, people dropped him like a hot rock!

Discussion

Katie :Hello there! I liked these chapters...they were very interesting! I think Jane and Mr. Bingly are cute together. Hehe ;) And Mr. Darcy is just plain mean...in my opinion. lol Mr. Bennet made me laugh when Mrs. Bennet starting telling him every single little detail about the ball. I think Mr. Bennet is my favorite character so far. ;)

Emily: Hi, Katie!  So glad you're here.  You have your sweet tea? ;)  Mr. Bennet is a fun character...I love how sarcastic he is! Hehe...Mrs. Bennet is a really fun character too cause she's super gullible and believes like everything her husband tells her. Lol!  Mr. Darcy is downright mean...extremely rude...which is kind of ironic considering how caught up with being proper people were back then.

Pride and Prejudice-Chapters 3 & 4

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend so far!  Hope today has been going well for you...and that you're excited (and ready!) for our book club meeting.

So here we are, discussing "Pride and Prejudice" once again.  I hope y'all are enjoying this book...it's one of my favorites! ;)  Today, we'll be discussing chapters 3 & 4.  In these chapters, we meet Mr. Bingly, Mr. Darcy, and a few minor characters (Miss Bingly, Mr. and Mrs. Hurst.).  What are your thoughts on these characters? What about the reactions of the Bennet family to these gentlemen?

Sorry for the super late notice, peeps! :(

Hi Everyone!

First off, I'm sorry that we didn't meet last week.  I know that we were supposed to, but, due to my lack of planning, that didn't happen. :( So, instead, we're going to try and get together this week...Saturday at 2 pm (Eastern time...please adjust this to your time zone!).  We'll be discussing chapters 3 and 4 of "Pride and Prejudice". Sorry that this is such late notice (why do I have to be such a last minute sort of person? Grrr...).

Please let me know if this time works for you...if not, I have no problem with rescheduling!  Just let me know! :)

Happy Reading!

Continued discussion on P & P-chapters 1 and 2

Katie: Great quotes! :) Well I gotta get. I had a great time, Emily! Thanks! Talk to you soon!

Emily: I had a really good time too, Katie! I'm glad you enjoyed our time together...I'm actually going to have to go too...but, like I said, I had fun! Can't wait to do it again.  Y'all let me know when would be a good time to do this again! :)

Amanda: I had fun! Bye everyone!

Continued discussion of P & P-chapters 1 & 2

Zach:Hello, nice to meet you. I had a feeling I was missing a few daughters.
I like this one, She [Mrs. Bennet] was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. (Ch. 1)...

Katie:Mrs. Bennet: "...You have no compassion on my poor nerves." Mr. Bennet: "You mistake me, my dear. I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old friends. I have heard you mention them with consideration these twenty years at least."

Jennifer:Though I wouldn't say this is my favorite, this quote cracks me up because it is true for me. :) "Oh!" said Lydia stoutly, "I am not afraid; for though I am the youngest, I'm the tallest." I also love this one: "Mary wished to say something very sensible, but knew not how." Both are from Chapter 2.

Amanda: Mrs. Bennet : "Ah! you do not know what I suffer!"
Mr. Bennet: "But I hope you will get over it, and live to see many young men of four thousand a year come into the neighborhood."
Mrs. Bennet: "It will be no use to us, if twenty such should come since you will not visit them! " (Chapter 1)

Emily: I love when Mrs. Bennet starts scolding poor Kitty...for coughing! "Don't keep coughing so, Kitty, for heaven's sake! Have a little mercy on my poor nerves! You tear them to pieces." Then Mr. Bennet: "Kitty has discretion in her coughs...she times them ill." And poor Kitty: "I do not cough for my own amusement."

Continued discussion on P & P-chapters 1 and 2

So what was y'all's favorite quotes from chapter 1 and chapter 2?

Continued discussion on P & P-chapters 1 and 2

Zach:Doesn't the Bennets have three daughters? I'm not for sure I could be mistaken.

Jennifer:Hey everyone! Mr. Bennet is definitely my favorite, but Mrs. Bennet makes me laugh so hard. She's so annoying!

Emily: Hi Zach! Hi Jennifer! So glad y'all sould make it! The Bennets actually have 5 girls...but only 3 of them are really main characters...Mary and Kitty stay in the background mostly.

Mrs. Bennet is hysterical, isn't she Jennifer? Though I don't think I could handle her antic 24/7! :)

Discussion on Pride and Prejudice-Chapters 1 & 2

Katie: That was funny! ;) My copy of the book spells chooses weird. They spell it 'chuses'. Does yours spell it like that? Maybe it's just my copy. Haha! Oh, I had a question...how many daughters do the Bennets have? I was just wondering...

Amanda:  They have 5 daughters, Jane, Lizzie, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia.

Emily: No, our copies don't spell it that way...maybe it's just a mis-print? Or, possibly an old version of spelling the word! Haha! Yep, 5 girls...don't you know that a bunch of drama happens in the Bennet household! :) Each of the girls are very interesting, as you shall soon see!

Discussion on Pride and Prejudice-Chapters 1 & 2

Katie: Yeah I thought it was funny how Mr. Bennet insisted on not going to visit Mr. Bingly and then he ends up going secretly. That was funny!

Amanda: I love Mrs. Bennet before Mrs. Bennet announces that he has actually visited Mr. Bingly: "I am sick of Mr. Bingly!" Then Mr. Bennet: "I am sorry to hear that, but why did you not tell me as much before? If I had known as much this morning, I certainly would have not called on him..."

Emily: Yes! Another thing I love is how Mrs. Bennet scolds Kitty for coughing so much...and then Mr. Bennet telling her that she can "cough as much as she chooses.".

Discussion on Pride and Prejudice-chapters 1 & 2

Katie: That's fine! Zach wanted me to let you know he'd be a little late but he's gonna be able to make it. Both their characters are funny! I still don't understand the need to match up their daughters, though. LOL I guess it's just the time period. ;) I wonder if any of them will end up with Mr. Bingley? I can't remember exactly what happens in the movie... Haha!

Emily: Okay, that's fine about Zach!  Yes, both Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are extremely funny!  I know Mr. Bennet is a very tolerant man-in his own sarcastic way! :)  I love how he leads Mrs. Bennet on about how he's not going to visit Mr. Bingly, then goes off and visits him and all!  LOL!  I also love how he told them that he had indeed met Mr. Bingly!

Amanda: I like Mrs. Bennet: "How can you abuse your children in such a way? You take delight in vexing me! You have no compassion on my poor nerves."

Discussion on Pride and Prejudice-Chapters 1 & 2

My computer STILL does not want to let me post comments, so I'm going to have to post the discussion in post form....oh well...we'll manage! :)

Katie:Hello Emily! :) I'm here with my tea and my book!
I enjoyed the first two chapters! I think my favorite character so far is Mr. Bennet. His personality makes me laugh. ;)
Emily: Hi Katie! How did I know you were going to have a glass of tea with you? ;) Hehe...enjoy it!

Mr. Bennet is a fun character...but so is Mrs. Bennet! In a rather annoying way! Her comments about her "poor nerves" cracks me up!

Amanda: I love Mr. and Mrs. Bennet! They are the best! My favorite quote by Mr. Bennet is "Depend upon it my dear, when there are twenty <young men in the neighborhood>, I shall visit them all!"

Pride and Prejudice-Chapters 1 & 2

Here we are for the first time this summer to discuss “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. There are certainly some interesting characters in this story…and we’ve only read the first two chapters! :) The chapters we read were fairly short, but they were certainly full of personality!  The two main characters we met were Mr. and Mrs. Bennet.  What are your thoughts on them?

I'm eager to hear your thoughts, so, let the discussion begin! :)

Book Club Meeting Next Saturday!

Hi there!

I know it’s been forever since we’ve had a meeting….that’s totally my fault.  I suppose I just got busy. :-/ But, I really enjoyed reading and meeting together, so we’re going to try this again! J

This time, we’ll be reading Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”.  I know we didn’t finish discussing “Emma”, but since it’s been so long since we first started reading that book, I thought it would be easier to start again with a clean slate rather than backtracking.

Sooo….next Saturday (7/2/2011) at 1:30 pm <Eastern Time> (please adjust this time to fit your time zone.) Lost in a Book will be meeting to discuss “Pride and Prejudice”.  In preparation for the meeting, please read chapters 1 & 2 of the book.

Please let me know if this date and time works for you.

Happy reading! J

Discussion

Yes exactly! I think it's funny how Emma seems to feel like she can/needs to help everyone with finding a spouse/mate and yet she has no experience of her own in that area. I do get that feeling from her. Like she's always right and always has the better opinion. Ugh. :P

Katie
___________________________________________________________________

A bit of a know-it-all....yeah, all in all, I am not liking Emma's character.  Hopefully, her personality will improve....and for the sake of those around her, let's hope it's soon! :)

Well, I'm going to have to wrap things up for today.  I had a really nice time meeting, Katie.  I seriously wish we could get some more people in on this...this is so fun! :)

Talk to you soon!

Emily

Discussion

Okey dokey! That's fine! :) I completely agree! I wish Emma would stay out of Harriet's love life. Even if Emma doesn't think so, Harriet is old enough to make her own decisions. In chapter 5 I 100% agree with Mr. Knightley on what he's saying about Harriet and Emma's relationship.

Ya know I sorda got that feeling too! Hmmm...what if he really is interested in Emma and has been all this time! Ooo! ;)

Katie
__________________________________________________________________

Mr. Knightly was so right-Harriet and Emma's relationship is not a healthy one.  Harriet is far to guliable to properly enjoy a friendship with push Emma.

Emma does certainly need to stay out of Harriet's business.  Even if Harriet did need help, Emma is not the person for the job!

Do you get the feeling that Emma holds the belief that her opinon is far to superior to everyone else's?  That's one thing that bugs me about her...that attitude of "my way or the highway" really grates me! :)

Emily

Discussion

Maybe it's just the old fashioned way Mr. Elton's showing interest in Harriet that makes me think it's weird...lol I don't know? Hehe ;)

Katie

I'm not overly sure that Mr. Elton is showing interest in Harriet.  I somehow get the feeling he's more interested in Emma...

Emily

Emma Discussion

My computer isn't allowing me to comment, so I'll just do the discussions in post form today! :)

________________________________________________________________

Hey there! It's ok about your computer. :) I agree with you...I don't like how she's trying to push Harriet onto Mr. Elton... :P Mr. Elton's interest in Harriet is just...kinda weird in my opinion. lol What do you think?

Katie

Hi Katie!

I hate that fact that Harriet is giving into Emma’s pushing.  She liked Mr. Martin, yet she’s willing to change her mind because of what Emma thinks.  Also, I think Emma is wrong for planting seeds about Mr. Elton liking Harriet and causing Harriet to grow hopeful.  I don’t think Mr. Elton even likes Harriet!  Harriet is really going to be hurt if/when she finds out that Emma was wrong.

Emma-Chapters 5 & 6

Hello Everyone!

I’m sorry that I’m running late….my computer was having issues and would not let me log into BLOGGER. Grrrr… But, I’m here now, so shall we begin?!?

Once again, we’re discussing Jane Austen’s classic novel, “Emma”.  As we progress through this book, we’re given a better glimpse of Emma’s character.  The more I see of Emma, the less I like her. She pushes her own agenda, despite what other people may want- convinced that her way is the best way.

What do you think of her response to Harriet’s proposal from Mr. Martin?  Also, what are your thoughts on Mr. Elton’s “interest” in Harriet Smith?

Please read chapters 5 & 6 in “Emma” and come with your thoughts on the on them.

Emma-Chapters 3 & 4

Hello Everyone!

Hope y'all are having a wonderful Saturday! ;)

Well, here we are at our second meeting.  I must admit, however, I come ill-prepared.  I did not read chapter 4.  Yes, I know, that is totally absurd considering I am the one who started all this.  But I have had a crazy week.  One of my friends is flying down to see me, so I have been very busy getting things ready for her.  I did read chapter 3, though, and do have a few thoughts on that.

So, in chapter 3, we are introduced to several new characters: Mr. Elton, Ms. Bates, Mrs. Goddard and Harriet Smith. However, the meat of the chapter is about Emma's attitude regarding Harriet (at least, I think so)  What do you think about Emma's attitude towards Harriet?

Next meeting date

Hello everyone!

I'm sorry this post is so late....

Our next meeting date is February 5, 2011 at 1:45 pm eastern time (once again, please adjust this time to fit your time zone).  Will this work for y'all?  Please let me know if it will not, because I would be happy to change it if need be.

Please read chapters 3 and 4 in "Emma".

I'm looking forward to our next meeting!

Emma-Chapters 1 & 2

Hi everyone, and welcome to Lost in a Book’s first meeting!

I hope everyone was able to find “Emma” and read the first 2 chapters.  I have a confession:  I actually did not get “Emma” from the library until yesterday! Ack!  But, I did pick it up and read through chapters 1 and 2….I really enjoyed them.  What did you think?  Did you have a favorite part or quote?  We were introduced to several characters-each one very different.  Which character stood out to you most, and what are your thoughts on his/her attitude?

I’m eager to see your responses, so let the discussion begin!  Comment your responses below and let’s get started! :-)

First Meeting-Coming Soon!

Hi Everyone!

I'm getting excited about the book club!  Responses haven't been plentiful (yet!), but that's okay!  We're just getting started, but hopefully, others will come and join us!  Please spread the word among your book loving friends! :)

I am hoping to have our first meeting January 22, 2011 (next Saturday) at 1:45 PM (Eastern time).  Will this work for y'all?  Please let me know.  I want to (if at all possible) accomadate schedules and make this work for you! :)

In order to be able to fully appreciate the meeting, please pick up a copy of "Emma" (that's pretty much needed!:)) and read the first two chapters of the book.  If come across something in the chapters that you want to bring up, make a note of it!  Remember, the posts are only going to be the beginning of our conversations!  If you're able, try to bring your own observations to the meeting so you can share them and we can discuss them!

Hope everyone has a good week!

Emily

P.S: Please be sure to comment and let us know if the meeting date will work for you...also, please adjust the time so that it will work for your time zone! :)

Welcome

Welcome to Lost in a Book!  I am so excited that you’re here!

My name is Emily and I am Christian teenager.  I love reading…my favorite books are “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, by J.R.R Tolkien and Jane Austen’s masterful novel, “Pride and Prejudiced”.   Good books are wonderful by themselves, but when you have a group of friends to discuss these books with, they’re even better!

I’d like to invite you to join the Lost in a Book club. I know we’re going to have a great time and good discussions.  So if you’re interested in joining us, we’d love your company!

This is how it will work:  we would like to set up a specific "meeting" date (we'd like it to be every-other-week) where all club members will get on "Lost in a Book".  At our designated meeting time, we'll begin our meeting.  To get things going, there will be a few discussion questions.  We'll respond to these questions by commenting.  From there, conversation will hopefully take off in the comments.  We want to make this where you can participate, so please let us know what day and time frame would work best for you.  We're not going to be able to fit into everyone's schedule exactly, but we would like to make it as close as possible!  :-)

The first book we'll be reading/discussing is Emma by Jane Austen.  If you've never heard of her before, let me assure you that Jane Austen is excellent. Her books are long, but we're going to break the book up, so hopefully, it shan't be too intimidating.  You should be able to easily find a copy of Emma at your local library...

If you're interested in joining our group, please comment below.  Also, in your comment, please include day and time that you think would work well for you.

Emily

P.S: if you have any book suggestions for future reading projects, please let us know!
