Hello Everyone!
Hope y'all are having a wonderful Saturday! ;)
Well, here we are at our second meeting. I must admit, however, I come ill-prepared. I did not read chapter 4. Yes, I know, that is totally absurd considering I am the one who started all this. But I have had a crazy week. One of my friends is flying down to see me, so I have been very busy getting things ready for her. I did read chapter 3, though, and do have a few thoughts on that.
So, in chapter 3, we are introduced to several new characters: Mr. Elton, Ms. Bates, Mrs. Goddard and Harriet Smith. However, the meat of the chapter is about Emma's attitude regarding Harriet (at least, I think so) What do you think about Emma's attitude towards Harriet?
Hey there, Emily! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm here with my copy of "Emma", a cup of sweet tea (once again) and JJ Heller playing. ;)
To be honest, I disliked Emma more in these last couple chapters. She decides she's going to take Harriet under her wing and get her together with Mr. Elton. In the process she tries to change Harriet. Urg. I don't think that's a good idea. That's just my opinion though. :) I think Emma needs a bit more 'growing up' first. lol
Katie
P.S. And no worries on not being able to finish the reading. :)
Hi Katie!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I did not appreciate how Emma was convinced Harriet was in need of changing...Emma is so proud and concieted that she is thinks she is the best thing for Harriet. Whatever!
I know! And in chapter 4 Harriet lets on that she kinda likes this farmer boy, Mr. Martin. Emma says all these awful things about him to make sure Harriet doesn't get too interested in him. What's wrong with a farmer? lol
ReplyDeleteShe is so shallow! Emma is way too caught up in her social status and outward appearance! I hated in chapter 3 how she was so drawn to Harriet because of Harriet's pretty face. :{ We frown on that now, but the modern world is just as bad about it...howoften to we judge someone based on what's on the outside? That really annoys me (even though I'm guilty of it!)
ReplyDeleteOh gosh, I know! I totally know what you mean. Sometimes we'll do it and don't even realize it... Sad. And I'm sure I'm guilty of it too. :P
ReplyDeleteI'm really interested in how this book is gonna turn out. I hope that something (not sure what) happens to make Emma kinda wake up and realize it's not all about her and what she thinks is right. Ha!
And don't you know her waking up is somehow going to involve Mr. Knightley?!? LOL! Yeah, she really needs to get a grip.
ReplyDeleteSo I've been sitting here reading a bit into chapter 4, and you're right. She does trash Mr. Martin. But I don't think she does it in an overly obvious manner. I thnk she's doing it subtly. Kind of planting seeds of him being inferior to Harriet's upper class (or wahtever they think they have on him!).
Haha! It probably will involve Mr. Knightley! He's the only one that will tell her the honest truth.
ReplyDeleteYeah, she does do it subtly. And you can tell that Harriet is trying hard to believe what Emma's saying but she's not really liking it. If I remember correctly (I could be wrong...lol) I think Emma makes some subtle jabs at Harriet 'cause she doesn't have parents. :P Urg Emma! Haha!
A rather infuriating character, isn't she? Yeah, her flaws are most obvious. I think her issue that annoys me most is the fact that she won't acknowledge her own failings. Grr....
ReplyDeleteI've had a nice time talking with you Katie (I don't know where Jennifer was....), but I'm going to have to go! My busy week isn't over yet! ;)
Emily
P.S: Can't wait to see the photo contest results! ;)
No kidding! I completely agree! ;)
ReplyDeleteIt was a very nice meeting! I had fun! Yeah, I'm not sure where my friend was either...lol. You have a good weekend! Talk to you soon!
Katie
P.S. I can't wait either! :)
I'm so sorry I wasn't here! We had to take my grandmother to the ER (she is fine now; nothing terrible) and I wasn't able to get back. But, I can definitely give you some of my thoughts now!
ReplyDeleteI've already told Emily that I've read Emma before. (Don't worry, I won't give anything away!) Honestly, Emma's character at the beginning made me wonder if I even wanted to finish the book. She is so annoying. I hate her matchmaker self and how she thinks the world revolves around her. So high and mighty. There are definitly lessons to be learned from Emma, like how it is best not to manipulate others for one's own glory. I feel bad for Harriet. She just seems rather naive and looking for guidance from someone. Emma is not the right person, though!
We missed you, Jennifer! Hope you can make it next time! Hope your grandma is doing better...
